Navigazione Laghi divides its network into three operational zones: the lower basin between Desenzano and Peschiera, the mid-lake corridor from Salò to Bardolino, and the northern fjord from Riva to Malcesine. Passenger ferries, car ferries, hydrofoils, and slow panoramic boats all share the same docking infrastructure but follow separate timetables published on the operator's website and posted at each harbour ticket office. Summer timetables—typically June through mid-September—prioritize trunk routes connecting Desenzano, Sirmione, Lazise, Bardolino, Garda, Malcesine, Limone, and Riva del Garda. Morning departures between 07:00 and 10:00 see the highest frequency, with hydrofoil services completing the Desenzano-Riva run in 90 minutes versus three and a half hours by slow ferry. Car ferries operate on two lines only: Maderno-Torri del Benaco and Limone-Malcesine, both running continuously from dawn until evening with no reservation system—vehicles board first-come, first-served until capacity. Winter schedules contract sharply. From November through March, many smaller villages lose direct service entirely, and even major routes drop to three or four departures per day. The Desenzano terminal at Piazza Matteotti remains the network's operational anchor year-round, with ticket counters opening at 07:00 and the last departures clearing the dock by 23:00. Timetables shift again in April and October during shoulder season, when frequencies sit midway between winter minimums and summer peaks. Ferry schedules align poorly with regional bus and train arrivals—no formal timed transfers exist. Passengers connecting from Desenzano railway station face a twelve-minute walk to the harbour, and the first departure leaves well before most morning trains arrive from Milan or Verona. The official navigation schedule bundles routes, service types, and fare zones into a single grid updated quarterly, available as a printed booklet at ticket offices or as a PDF download indexed by departure port and destination. Boarding closes five minutes before departure. Tickets purchased on board incur no surcharge but are subject to seat availability, and during July and August weekends, popular morning runs to Sirmione and Malcesine fill quickly enough that advance purchase at the harbour office or online is the safer move.
